Early vector clean up

Thu May 9, 2013, 10:26 AM by ~Quasdar:iconquasdar:
The #MLP-VectorClub strives to create a collection of high quality vectors of the show. However, back when this group started, there was no set of specific quality requirements like the rule-set we have today. The rules as they stand today ensure a consistent quality level in the gallery.

For a long time, a difficult problem for us has been trying to figure out what to do with the old vectors that came into the Club before the rules were there. Today we'd like to announce we've come to a decision on how best to handle them. After much discussion it has been decided that a clean-up is in order for all folders to resolve this issue. In one week the admins will be scanning through the gallery and removing vectors that are noticeably not up to the standard. Don’t worry though; if they were yours, simply fix them up and resubmit. They will be inspected, and when they meet the new requirements, added to the Club again! This process will ensure that when you view an item in our gallery it's something that the admins stand behind as a good model of how to make that type of vector.

Need a refresher on the group’s quality requirements?

Head on over to the main page for the complete breakdown. In short, make sure your vector follows these standards:

:bulletblack: If you traced from the show, you must link to your vector files.
:bulletblack: Avoid these common mistakes.
:bulletblack: Export your image at as high a resolution as you can, at MINIMUM 3kx3k pixels.
:bulletblack: Trace from a 1080p copy of the show.
:bulletblack: Use our color guide.
:bulletblack: Be aware of the difference between RBG and CMYK color modes, and use RGB.
:bulletblack: Save losslessly (PNG, not JPG for stills; APNG/SVG/FLV/SWF, not GIF for animation).
:bulletblack: Keep your source vector file even if you don’t post it, and back it up safely! Be prepared for the possibility of hard drive failures, theft of hardware, natural disasters, fires, and/or accidental deletion. Having it in two places on the same computer isn’t really safe. Dropbox and Sta.sh are two excellent web services.

We’d also like to announce that we have new Vector Inspectors to support our team! These fine deviants will now be helping to inspect your vector submissions:

It's called a taper. I made a quick video to explain how to do it in inkscape a while back : [link]
Hope that helps.

can anyone give me advice on how to do a shine effect like the one on this vector [link]
it has several highlights including on the gemstone that can't do with the gradient tool. I can make only one highlight but that's it I'm trying to go for something like this [link]

What program do you use?

It should be the same with most software, but what you should do is create a the shapes which will be the shines like so here: [link]. Then if you are using illustrator, duplicate the background shape, and then select both the shine shape and the background shape like here: [link]. Then select Minus Front or Intersect button from the pathfinder menu. (The technique should be similar in Inkscape) You will end up with something like this: [link] . You can then add color to your shapes like here: [link] . Hope this helps somewhat.

For a piece to be added to our gallery, it needs to adhere to our submission rules, which unfortunately this vector doesn't do. It needs to be 3000px by 3000px or more, be available for download, and the source file be linked in the description for any show traces. The artist also needs to apply and be accepted into the #MLP-VectorClub to submit artwork to our gallery.

Do you have any vectors of Nyx?

There are probably some in the OCs folder.

I just started using illustrator a few days ago and I've gotten use to the pen tool but I keep running into the same problem, I keep messing up on sharp strokes and sharp curves while practicing like on the mane and tail on this vector [link]
I adjusted the miter limit and that didn't help and when I use convert anchor point it works one time If try it any more my strokes lose their anchor points and I can't make curves on the stroke. I am at my wits end I would really appreciate help.

It took me forever to find the Convert Anchor Point tool when I was first looking for it. Here's an image [link]
Follow SR's advice about making it "broken". You can also use the tool that looks like an upside down V to do this. ALT may be the key to use (on the Pen tool) to shortcut get this tool, but I don't have AI to check right now.

I think I understand your problem. Hold down ctrl while moving the handle of a node (a handle will say 'handle' when you hover over it), and it will 'break' that node. Adjust the handles to change the way the line comes to a point. The closer together the handles are, the longer the point will be. Once you have broken a node, you do not need to continue to hold ctrl to move the handles. To unbreak a node, use the convert anchor point tool to change it back to smooth.

Are you guys going to update the color guide to include the rest of season 3 characters like Lightning Dust, the Timberwolfs, etc. ?
Reply
:iconzutheskunk:
We just did.

However, it doesn't include timberwolves... yet.

One more question;

I started working on a couple Doctor Whooves vectors for the first time since my first two and I noticed the varying colors in his subfolder, and a number of them looked much brighter than the color guide's.

I opened up the episodes of his prominent appearances that I remembered (they're the iTunes originals in 1080p save for the one with the tie and hourglass, which is 720p at largest, and thus are color-corrected for Season 1 and the least lossy), and sampled the colors of his coat and put them in a picture here. Many of them are consistently brighter than the one used in the color guide.

So far, I'm learning toward using the RGB value from Call of the Cutie and A Canterlot Wedding for any vectors in the future. May I get an opinion from a higher-up from this group, perhaps?

The color guide recommended by the group was not made by the group admins, and we somewhat often find errors in it. Since there are so many different ponies on that guide, it's not always possible to check every individual pony.

I use my own colors for everything, largely because I vector a lot of less common ponies. I take them from the HD iTunes versions of the episodes, making sure I did not get color-corrected or compressed versions of the episodes. I would personally agree with your decision to use the colors from Call of the Cutie and A Canterlot Wedding.

It works. Assuming you used the same link in your membership request, the VI who processes it should have no issues. Although, you probably should include the icon that's referenced in the "how to join" instructions...

I work on Inkscape and I have a question that has not yet been answered. Whenever I use a certain base, at least one part does not fill and It forces me to use the 'bezier curves' tool. Is there a way I can fix it and use the paintbucket?

I need more information to answer this. What the base is, what you are trying to do, and exactly what the problem. Send me a note and I'll help you out.
