Early vector clean up

Thu May 9, 2013, 10:26 AM by ~Quasdar:iconquasdar:
The #MLP-VectorClub strives to create a collection of high quality vectors of the show. However, back when this group started, there was no set of specific quality requirements like the rule-set we have today. The rules as they stand today ensure a consistent quality level in the gallery.

For a long time, a difficult problem for us has been trying to figure out what to do with the old vectors that came into the Club before the rules were there. Today we'd like to announce we've come to a decision on how best to handle them. After much discussion it has been decided that a clean-up is in order for all folders to resolve this issue. In one week the admins will be scanning through the gallery and removing vectors that are noticeably not up to the standard. Don’t worry though; if they were yours, simply fix them up and resubmit. They will be inspected, and when they meet the new requirements, added to the Club again! This process will ensure that when you view an item in our gallery it's something that the admins stand behind as a good model of how to make that type of vector.

Need a refresher on the group’s quality requirements?

Head on over to the main page for the complete breakdown. In short, make sure your vector follows these standards:

:bulletblack: If you traced from the show, you must link to your vector files.
:bulletblack: Avoid these common mistakes.
:bulletblack: Export your image at as high a resolution as you can, at MINIMUM 3kx3k pixels.
:bulletblack: Trace from a 1080p copy of the show.
:bulletblack: Use our color guide.
:bulletblack: Be aware of the difference between RBG and CMYK color modes, and use RGB.
:bulletblack: Save losslessly (PNG, not JPG for stills; APNG/SVG/FLV/SWF, not GIF for animation).
:bulletblack: Keep your source vector file even if you don’t post it, and back it up safely! Be prepared for the possibility of hard drive failures, theft of hardware, natural disasters, fires, and/or accidental deletion. Having it in two places on the same computer isn’t really safe. Dropbox and Sta.sh are two excellent web services.

We’d also like to announce that we have new Vector Inspectors to support our team! These fine deviants will now be helping to inspect your vector submissions:

Eef...that doesn't meet our rules anymore. You'd have to request it from the artist, but I would suggest looking for a newer version. That one has too many errors, and will be removed.

Couple questions:

- With the second trailer of Equestria Girls out earlier today, there were a few pony (not human) Sunset Shimmer vectors made, but where would these go if they were to be submitted, under Equestria Girls or under Antagonists? Here is my example.

- I noticed the new IDW comic folder, for :iconsibsy:'s birthday I made this and was planning to submit it to that folder, but most save for a couple of vectors do not use shading, just like the show. Will there be any strict criteria for this folder in the future referring to how show-accurate submissions need to be? (e.g. no shading)

- That is yet to be discussed, but personally I'd say that any actual pony vectors from EqG can go into other folders.

- Unless otherwise specified, any vectors traced or strongly based on IDW comics should go into this folder.

I would be interested. do you just need Line-art? Or would you like it colored as well?

If you would like to colour it, that would be amazing. :D

But if you do that, would you mind also providing a line art?

Sure. Is there more to the comic? Because if there is, I would love to do it as well. Also, can I sumbit it to my gallery upon completion? Or would you like to submit the color.

Might I suggest a new folder for IDW comic-based vectors (whether direct or inspired?) We've got at least 5-6 artists, myself included, that are pulling from those now, and since we've established these aren't really show-exact (and thus not in the main folders), this might be a good place for them as to distinguish from other original styles.

It's on the docket. Unfortunately, a Manager has to do it and hasn't yet gotten around to it. Look for it soon :)

Thanks, but this is old news. We're pretty locked down as far as members go, so hopefully we won't have to worry about that.

I have a question regarding pony eyes that I couldn't seem to find an answer to in the tutorials.

Is there some rule that defines what side of the iris the colored highlights are supposed to be on?

In the show I've seen quite a variance. On ponies that have the highlights, I've seen screen caps of them having none, one eye only, both eyes same direction, both eyes opposite direction, and even both directions in both eyes.

I know there are errors and such in the show, which is why I was wondering if we have any general rules for this sort of thing.

Some ponies, mostly background ponies (and all stallions except Shining Armor) simply do not have eye accents as part of their design.

The accents for ponies who do have them tend to 'point' toward the smaller white highlight in their eye.

If you can see only one eye of the pony, the highlights point in the direction they are looking in. [link]

If you can see both eyes of the pony, the highlights most commonly go on the outside of their eyes (closer to their cheeks than their other eye). Like so: [link]

The eye accents are one of the most common animation errors in the show. If they look strange to you, try to pick up some similar references and use your best judgement. It gets easier to point out what looks wrong (and fix it) with more practice.

I need some help. I was hoping on making a vector of my OC, but I don't know how I can find the right stroke or shadow color for my mane and tail.
Is there some sort of pattern to the strokes and shadows relative to the fill? Or do you just sort of use a darker version of the fill? I know to use color guides, but of course there isn't one for my OC.
Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The stroke and shadow colors are slightly darker and slightly more saturated than the fill color. Each color is unique, and they don't follow any kind of formula. Look at colors similar to yours and use your best judgement for what looks good.

My AppleJack That's Them [link] already in the group, but the thing is, it's not showing up in the Applejack folder or it must be in a different folder. Do you know what folder it is in? Why is it not in the right folder, or is it in a different folder?
